In some situations, a prior nasal operation has not corrected the abnormal appearance of the nose. It may be years after the first surgery but over time new irregularities may appear or perhaps the unwanted shapes that prompted someone to seek a Rhinoplasty gradually reappear. The techniques used by our surgeons at the Facial Plastic Surgery Center are well-suited to address revision surgery. By using concepts of structure and support to reshape the nose when revising someone's prior treatment,the final outcome can be both esthetically pleasing and long-lasting.

During your consultation, your surgeon will examine the structure of your nose, both internally and externally, to evaluate what needs to be accomplished. Photos will be taken but it is helpful to bring in your own photographs that may have been captured before prior nasal surgery.
State-of-the-art imaging software will be used to simulate potential cosmetic results. In some cases, only a minor modification is needed and the surgery can be carried out under local anesthesia without the need for sedation. In other cases, there are more extensive abnormalities lurking beneath tile nasal surface not easily appreciated by an untrained eye.
The majority of incisions are made inside the nose (Closed Rhinoplasty) where they are invisible. In some cases, an incision is made in the area of skin separating the nostrils (Open Rhinoplasty) for easier access to the misshapen nasal cartilage and bone. Additionally, your surgeon may describe how additional cartilage can be borrowed from your ear or rib in order to reshape the nose.
Immediately after surgery, tape and a small cast will be placed on your nose to protect it and to keep the structure stable. Flexible splints may be inserted inside the nose to maintain stability. Daily nasal irrigation with salt water will keep the inside clean for easier removal of these splints. You will be advised to sleep elevated and use cold compresses to minimize bruising and swelling. Pain medication should manage any discomfort. Your surgeon will advise you to avoid blowing your nose for 7 days after surgery. If any external incisions are used, sutures are removed in 6 to 8 days leaving a nearly imperceptible scar. Strenuous activities will be prohibited for two weeks after the surgery. Sun exposure, exertion, and risk of injury must be avoided. To help your newly formed nose maintain its shape you will be advised not to wear eyeglasses or sunglasses on the bridge of your nose for approximately six weeks.
Keep all post-operative appointments as scheduled. Anything unusual should be reported to your doctor immediately.
